I specifically didn't want dictionaries with ABCDE keyboards which are nonsense in our world. QWERTY keyboard contributed to my choice of Franklin Kid. It prevented milk and juice spillages on the keyboard several times. They also love highlighting a word in a definition and hitting a button to checking the meaning. They love some functions like CONFUSABLES or putting wildcards (question mark or asterisk) instead of some letters in a word. Children tend to save the batteries by turning the volume down a bit. The capacity increased after several cycles and they last for quite a while. We now use top quality rechargeable batteries. Initially the batteries would run out quickly. After all they are surrounded by multitude of accents and regional differences anyway!!! Pity it is American English but it wasn't and isn't a big problem.Ĭhildren do understand the difference between British and American English faster then we give them credit for (the influence of American TV programs is massive). Children check words frequently while reading books. Our emphasis always is on self-reliance and monitoring homework from the distance so children don't develop total dependency on grownups helping them. Most frequent and favourite use is to copy a word from a book to see its meaning and pronunciation without calling parents for help. Eventually your child will not need this help as it progresses. Early on parents need to help typing correctly all words the child is curious about. The trickiest part is checking spoken words. Franklin makes dictionary accessible to kids before they learn how to use printed ones and before they have enough focus to find the word they need without loosing track and reading everything else instead. When they were younger they didn't know how to use paper dictionaries. They have learned to distinguish between verbs, adjectives and nouns very early. They pull the Franklins out of the drawer first thing after school everyday when they do their homework! Franklins assisted them in learning spellings, reading and writing. My twins got Franklin Kid each 3 years ago. Franklin Kid proved itself 100%! They are expensive but worth it. I bought it with trepidation because of the high price (had to buy two as I have twns).
